After quarterbacking Capital High to its first State football championship, and sparking Bruin basketball to a program record for wins, Bobby Petrino became a rare two-sport All-District selectee for Carroll. On the gridiron, he helped CC to three straight Conference titles from 1980-82. As starting QB for those seasons, the 5’11”, 170-pounder was selected first team All-Conference every year, and was a two-time Frontier MVP and NAIA honorable mention All-American (1981-82).
Bobby established 13 Saints grid records – five for single game, and four each for season and career. Among his more impressive achievements were 24 completions, 306 passing yards and 5 touchdown strikes in a game; 146 season pass completions (doubling the old mark) and 2028 yards; and 282 career completions, 31 TDs and 4218 passing yards. In basketball, Petrino broke the Hilltop’s career free throw percentage mark, while garnering his 7th varsity letter. As a senior he became just the fourth Saint hoopster (at that time) to average 20 points per game.
The versatile Petrino netted 20-plus points 13 times (PR 37 vs. CGF), led the team with 139 assists and averaged 5.3 rebounds. His career 1145 points (in 3 seasons) ranked No. 6 on CC’s list. Bobby followed in his father’s footsteps coaching football, at which he became a successful Division I head college coach – at places like Louisville, Arkansas, Western Kentucky and Missouri State – while guiding his teams to 11 Bowl Games. His NFL experience included stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars (assistant, 1999-2001) and Atlanta Falcons (head coach 2007).
