Anaconda Central alum Bob Applegate arrived on the Hilltop as a junior transfer from MSU in the fall of 1972. A 6’0” 190-lb safety, he became a 2-time All-Conference selection – second team that season, and first team as a senior. In 1972, he was the Saints’ second leading tackler vs Minot State, with 18 total tackles. During his final season, arguably his best game occurred in the 48-35 win over Rocky, when he led Carroll’s gridders with 75 defensive points. Bob posted a pair of interceptions against the Bears, along with 6 total tackles (4 solo, 2 assists).

In the 26-6 win over Ricks, he pilfered an interception and was fourth in defensive points, and in the 12-7 victory over Dickinson State, he recovered a fumble and picked off a Blue Hawk pass. Applegate finished the year ranked No. 5 in defensive points, at 320½. He won both his bouts boxing in the Carroll Smokers; a split decision at 200 pounds in 1973, and in 1974 by unanimous decision at 175. After graduation he played in the Alumni Game, and then coached the Saints’ running backs for the 1974 season.
