After winning four Wyoming State High School golf championships for Sheridan High, Bill Lannan became a 4-time Montana College Conference golf champion with Carroll. As a freshman, Bill won the 1951 title at Billings’ Highland Golf Course with a score of 157 over 36 holes, 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Eugene Lingo (Montana Mines) at 167. In 1952, at Helena’s Green Meadow CC, Lannan carded a 86-81—167 to retain his title, winning by 10 again, this time over the Orediggers’ John Peterson with 84-93—177.
His junior year, he captured the Conference three-peat, firing an 81-81—162 at GMCC. Saints’ teammate Don O’Dell placed runner-up at 222. Lannan garnered his fourth successive MCC championship in 1954 at Butte Country Club in the Mining City, shooting an 82-79—161. Another Hilltopper, Bob Maronick (Great Falls), came in second, with an 85-90—175. Bill returned to his “Carroll Family” in the late 1950s, where he intermittently coached the Hilltop golfers; in the early 1960s and again in the late 1990s.
