A product of Catholic High School of Los Angeles, Barragan started every game all four years with Carroll. He played offensive tackle as a 210-pound freshman, before moving to guard the next year, where he became a 3-time All-Frontier first teamer and a 1974 All-American. Barragan was an outstanding blocker, helping forge many a hole for the backfield, and served as the Saints punter his last two seasons. When CC posted an undefeated 7-0 season in 1973, Barragan’s leg made the film highlights during a 12-7 victory over Dickinson State. Among his eight punts were three over 50 yards, including a booming 70-yard bomb.
In a 28-14 win over Tech that clinched a tie for the Saints first Frontier title in 12 years, CC was punting from the Diggers’ 48. A bad snap initially eluded Barragan. But he spun around, retrieved the ball, ran a few steps and quick-kicked to inside the 5-yard line. His senior year, the 6’3” 225-pounder averaged 50.1 yards for three punts vs. Eastern Oregon. Armando garnered his third All-Conference selection and was chosen All-District 12, while being named NAIA honorable mention All-American. After an unsuccessful tryout with the San Francisco 49ers, he returned for one season of assistant coaching on the Hilltop.
