Alfred “Al” Donich of Racetrack, Mont., played both ways his sophomore and junior years (1931-32) for Mount Saint Charles football team, at right tackle and halfback. In 1931, he helped the Saints to an undefeated, untied (7-0-0) and unscored upon record. The next season, during a 25-0 win over Butte’s Dublin Gulch adult club, he scored the team’s third touchdown on a 67-yard jaunt to The House.
“It was a beautiful run and stamped young Donich a man to watch,” the Helena Independent reported. Al was selected 1932 first team All-Montana College Conference. Unfortunately, football was suspended on the Hilltop his senior year, so he transferred to the Mining City’s Montana Mines College, where he retained his All-Conference status in 1933. Donich also earned two letters at guard with MSC’s hoopsters.
