A center from Ronan, Sam Clairmont served as a Mount Saint Charles hoops starter for two years. His final season of 1929-30, the Saints beat Whitman College 71-62, setting a team record for scoring. These were the days when every basket was followed by a jump ball, while the clock kept running, accounting for very low-scoring games. One of his best games was a 13-point effort during a win over Helena’s Intermountain College. In a narrow loss to Gonzaga, 47-46, Clairmont tied for the team’s No. 2 scorer (10 points). The following night, on Feb. 13, 1930, the Saints defeated the Zags 42-39. They would not beat the Bulldogs again for 22 years, until 1952.
