Esposito Wins 1,000 Meter Title, 13 Saints Named All-American

RESULTS

GENEVA, Ohio –
Leah Esposito won the 1,000 meter final and 13 Carroll Track and Field Athletes were named All-Americans (top-8) Saturday at the final day of the 2015 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championship.

The Carroll women finished in a tie for seventh as a team and the men finished 13th but it was the sophomore from Helena that stole the show.

Esposito won the 1,000 meter with a time of 2:52.04 more than a second faster than the second-place finisher and more than four second faster than she ran in the preliminaries which was previously her fastest time of the year.

"Leah is such a competitor," head coach Harry Clark said. "You could see it in her eye. She was focused and ready for today and she showed it when she got on that track. Not only in the 1,000 but she had a great race in the mile too."

To go along with her championship run in the 1,000, she placed third in the 1 mile with a time of 4:56.22. Her previous season-best time before this weekend was 5:04.21.

In the men's mile run, the Saints racked up two All-Americans with David Thor finishing second with a time of 4:13.91 and Lyle Pocha taking sixth with a time of 4:15.42.

In the women's individual races, Sandy Torres took fifth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.53 and Rhianna Grossman finished fifth in the 3,000 meter with a time of 9:56.50.

In the relays the Carroll men's 4x400 meter relay was impressive in their fourth-place finish with a time of 3:13.28, just under seven second faster than their previous season best.

"There is fast and then there is crazy fast. That race was crazy fast," Clark said. "All four guys were just flat out moving. If you are a track junkie like me, it was a lot of fun to watch."

The Saint's men's Distance Medley Relay finished in sixth place but an injury on the second leg of the race hurt their chances to compete for a title.

The women's DMR finished second place with a time of 11:58.01.

The only field athlete to earn an All-American nod was Beaugh Meyer who finished an impressive eighth place in the Shot Put with a throw of 16.08 meters after recovering from shoulder surgery last summer.

"It was a great performance," Clark said. "The great thing about this group is that this served as motivation. They are excited to get back to Helena and get back to work to get ready for outdoor season."
