GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Carroll College women's cross country dominated the field finishing seven runners in the top ten and six of the top 10 to win the Frontier Conference Cross Country Championship held at Hickory Swings Golf Course in Great Falls Friday.
Leah Esposito won the race for the second consecutive year with a time of 18:25.38, nearly 37 seconds faster than second-place finisher Rachel Cundy of Lewis Clark. The Saints then had five straight finishers to dominate the team title.
Sandy Torres took third with a time of 19:11.54, followed by
Janie Reid with a time 19:12.44,
Heidi Hennings with a time of 19:15.82, and
Regan Bold with a time of 19:23.85 to close out the scoring for the Saints.
Carroll finished with 19 points, just four points from a perfect score of 15. Lewis Clark was second place with 52 points.
Micala Fifield came across the line in seventh with a time of 19:41.32 and
Abby Wilson finished 10th with a time of 19:51.71. The top 10 finishers earn all-conference honors.
"We ran great. It was really impressive, I never imagined that we would have come in here and do what we did today," head coach
David Morris said.
Esposito continues to impress and looks to be in prime position to earn a top-five finish at nationals in two weeks in Charlotte, N. C.
"Leah is having a great year and she continues today what she has done her whole career," Morris said. "Rachel Cundy stayed with her for a lot of the race but she pulled away in the end. She was just too strong today for anyone to challenge her."
The team looks like they are in strong position heading into Charlotte and they should add an additional piece in No. 2 runner
Samantha Mundel who missed much of the season with a nagging injury.
"On the women's side things are setting up really well for nationals," Morris said. "We definitely have a shot for top three and that is our goal all year to come home with a trophy."
Nationals is set for Nov. 21, at McAlpine Creek park in south Charlotte, N.C.
