It felt like time was standing still. Receivers and defensive backs were running this way and that. Linemen were frantically fighting each other. Austin Dodge was looking right, then left, then back right — biding time in the pocket as Saints defenders closed in. Fans, coaches and players stood nervously on the sideline.
Chased by several Saints, Dodge threw to Dylan Young, who made a sliding attempt in the back of the end zone. From behind it appeared the receiver who caught nine balls for 97 yards including the 21-yard score on fourth and 6 that necessitated the last-second two-point try had made a catch to provide Southern Oregon an improbable come-back win.
But when Carroll's sideline — and the approximately 6,000 Saints faithful anxiously holding their breath — erupted, it was clear Dodge pass was incomplete and the Saints could lay claim to a 42-40 thriller over the nation's fourth-ranked team.
